In the center of the axle on rear-wheel driven cars, and inside the transaxle in front-wheel driven cars, is located the differential. Once the outer races are seated properly, the ring gear can be moved against the drive pinion. This will help to obtain zero backlashes. Then, fit the largest shim on the ring gear side. This shim will take up clearance. Install the other shim on the opposite side to take up clearance plus desired preload. At times the shim sizes may have to be changed to obtain desired preload and backlash. Adjust the bearing preload correctly and install the caps. On the pinion flange install the holding tool.
